So, this is actually Sophie Kinsella however since Sophie Kinsella is her writer name, it really is Madeleine Wickham. We have overbearing, social climbing mothers, hen-pecked, wimpy fathers, underemployed actors, children seeking acceptance and friendship from teachers and household help, characters who are overextended financially, everyone worried about what everyone else will think, and of course the titillating extra-marital affair.
Marcus and Liz fall into a whirlwind affair while Jonathan is dedicated to tutoring young Daniel to help generate a boom in business. As Marcus starts to become involved with Liz, while her teenage daughter develops a passion for the lodgers, it seems that some deceptions are too close to home The secondary characters are so put upon by the main characters that you want to say, “Pay attention. What an utter waste of time. But soon Marcus found himself involved with Liz in a way he’d never intended.
While the adults deal with two mortgages, debt, and running a newly acquired tutorial school, Alice finds herself trying to fit in with the grown-ups in the Prentice household. Wickham does a marvelous job with these characters, though it is upsetting how very irresponsible almost all of the adults are throughout the novel.

Would you like us to take another look at this review? Alice, daughter of Liz and Jonathon is stuck in that world maxeleine teenage angst, hating her parents, enthralled with Ginny and Piers, whom she has a crush on. A very frustrating, pointless read. It appeared to me as all the dreams come crashing down that our unlikeable characters win out. De karakters zijn totaal niet sympathiek en soms zelfs ronduit irritant.
Ginny is a glam gal with a PR job, and husband Piers is a wannabe actor who may or may madelene land a top spot on an upcoming soapie.
As events close in, they all begin to realize that some deceptions are just a bit too close to home.

I am guessing she cranked this one out to meet her contract requirements. Sounds unpleasant — thanks for the honest review!
Your display name should be at least 2 characters long. The title should be at least 4 characters long. Most of the characters do appear to be dreaming of better things; Madelleine, married to Jonathon, has an affair with Marcus, dreams of not having money problems, Marcus, who is married to Anthea dreams of more success. The characters were fairly interesting although almost all mdaeleine unpleasant in some way, and I never greatly enjoy spending time with people I don’t particularly like – in real life or in books.
A Desirable Residence
I have never read this author and though it was very different I was surprised to have read it so quickly. Elements of the Shopoholic series are evident everywhere throughout the book and all I can say is that she definitely pulled the best of this book and tightened up her writing in order to create a mass sensation with that series.
Some parts were funny. It’s obviously not “cool” to divulge your innermost feelings to your parents or your spouse. The selfish people stayed selfish.
Description Liz and Jonathan are in trouble. This book was a huge disappointment for me.

You’ve successfully reported this review. Liz and Jonathan Chambers were in trouble. She’s a self-absorbed teenager, yes, and I could respect the fact that her behavior was realisticbut who wants to spend pages reading about a rude, deluded year-old?
From scheming, bored Marcus to ungrateful, uncharitable Liz, I struggled to find one character with whom connect in this British novel. The Chambers’ family is comprised of Liz, Jonathan, and their teenage daughter Alice. None of the characters really engaged me, and I really didn’t like how it ended.
